Before You Buy a Robot: 10 Questions Australian Businesses Should Ask

1. What problem are we actually solving?

Start with the operational constraint, safety exposure or service problem—not the machine. A clearly bounded problem makes technology evaluation and success measures more useful.

2. Is the task stable and repeatable?

Understand task variation, exceptions, volumes, travel paths and environmental change. Some automation opportunities are better addressed through process improvement or conventional equipment.

3. Is the site suitable?

Review access, surfaces, lighting, connectivity, pedestrian interaction, weather, dust and other operating conditions that could affect performance.

4. What must integrate with the robot?

Map systems, doors, lifts, charging, workflow hand-offs and data requirements. Integration effort can matter as much as the machine itself.

5. How will safety be governed?

Define risk assessment, supervision, incident response, operating boundaries and accountability with appropriately qualified specialists.

6. Who owns the outcome?

Nominate an operational owner who can coordinate technology, people, facilities, suppliers and day-to-day performance.

7. How will people work with it?

Involve the workforce early. Clarify role changes, escalation, training and how the technology will strengthen rather than obscure human responsibility.

8. What is the complete business case?

Consider acquisition, integration, site changes, support, downtime, training and ongoing ownership—not only the purchase price.

9. What will a pilot prove?

Set a controlled scope, baseline, safety requirements and clear measures before the pilot begins.

10. What happens after the demonstration?

Plan support, maintenance, governance, adoption and scaling decisions. A compelling demonstration is not yet an operational deployment.
